As part of International Beach and Coastal Cleanup Day, over 500 volunteers in Mejillones participated in a coastal cleanup organized by DIRECTEMAR. The event spanned the beaches of Guanaye, Balneario Municipal, La Rinconada, and Camping Militar, bringing together the community to promote environmental care.
Supported by the Chilean Navy, the Municipality of Mejillones, the Ocean Protection Foundation, and companies like SQM Yodo Nutrición Vegetal, the cleanup aimed to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the environment. Captain Carlos Gotuzzo of the Port of Mejillones expressed gratitude for the strong turnout, emphasizing the institution’s priority to engage the community in caring for the coastal areas.
Valesca Valverde, Director of Communities at Fundación Protección Oceánica, highlighted the collaboration between public and private entities, including local schools, to celebrate the day and promote environmental certification efforts in Mejillones.
The initiative, part of a global effort in over 120 countries, aims to collect waste from coastlines and raise awareness about ocean pollution. Nearly 300 students from local schools contributed to cleaning 10 key points along the coast.
SQM’s Assistant Manager of Communities noted that participating in such events aligns with the company’s values of sustainability and continual improvement in their environmental programs.
