Crystal Clean Undertakes Major PFAS Remediation Project in the Midwest, One of the World’s Largest

Crystal Clean, Inc., a leading provider of specialized environmental and waste management solutions, announced today the completion of its largest PFAS remediation project to date. Utilizing Crystal Clean’s 4never™ solution, the company successfully treated 1.46 million gallons of PFAS-impacted water over three weeks. PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of chemicals known as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment. These chemicals, found in many consumer and industrial products, pose health risks when accumulated in the body, necessitating effective management and removal.

The 4never™ solution, a turnkey service tailored to specific project requirements, operated continuously with an on-site PFAS processing plant at a confidential industrial site in the Midwestern U.S. The plant utilized four SAFF® (Surface Active Foam Fractionation) units, manufactured and exclusively distributed by 4never™ partners EPOC Enviro and Allonnia, to treat various PFAS-contaminated waters.

The multi-SAFF® setup treated the contaminated water by separating and concentrating PFAS, reducing the contaminants to a few gallons of concentrate per day. This concentrate was then transported to a Crystal Clean facility for final management and offsite third-party destruction.

“The combination of technologies, expertise, and infrastructure to deliver a comprehensive PFAS remediation solution at this scale is a testament to the flexibility of our 4never™ solution,” said Brian Recatto, President & CEO of Crystal Clean. “We are proud to offer this solution to businesses seeking large-scale PFAS remediation, addressing one of the century’s leading environmental issues in an environmentally responsible way.”

“EPOC Enviro’s patented SAFF® technology has successfully remediated over 260 million gallons of PFAS-impacted water at more than thirty sites worldwide,” said EPOC Enviro President Peter Murphy. “With the recent U.S. EPA release of Maximum Contaminant Levels for six PFAS compounds in drinking water and the CERCLA designation of PFOS and PFOA, having a proven and environmentally friendly method of managing PFAS is more relevant than ever.”

Crystal Clean is expanding its PFAS remediation capabilities and increasing the operating capacity of its 4never™ solution on a national scale. The company currently operates a PFAS treatment facility in Michigan and plans to add SAFF® treatment capabilities to several of its U.S.-based commercial wastewater treatment facilities.
