Svante Wins US DOE Funding to Enhance Carbon Capture in Pulp & Paper

The project will serve as a key demonstration of capability to generate high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits and significantly enhance the sustainability of the pulp and paper sector’s operations.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) has selected project for a cost-sharing agreement worth up to $1,499,889, pending the final award (Award Number: DE-FE0032652). This funding will enable in collaboration with project partners Paper Excellence and Wood, to conduct a Pre-FEED (Preliminary Front End Engineering Design) study. The study will focus on evaluating the feasibility of post-combustion carbon capture from the recovery boilers’ flue gas at the Ashdown pulp mill.

Removal of Up to 1.5 Million Tonnes of Biogenic CO2: Unlike traditional carbon capture, which focuses on anthropogenic or man-made CO2, this project targets biogenic CO2 originating from sustainable biomass, which was initially absorbed from the atmosphere. This approach allows for the removal of significant amounts of CO2 from the environment.
  2. Unlocking New Revenue Streams: By generating carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits in the voluntary carbon credit market, the project provides a new and profitable business case for the pulp and paper industry to engage in climate-positive activities.
  3. Demonstration of Svante’s Unique Technology for the Pulp and Paper Industry: The project will showcase how Svante’s carbon capture technology can be applied within the pulp and paper sector, providing a scalable and efficient solution for large-scale carbon capture.

Together, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on end-to-end carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. Tenaska has several Class VI applications under review and is committed to providing sustainable and cost-effective CCS pathways throughout the United States, including the Sugarberry CCS Hub in Texas.
