Svante and Tenaska Partner for Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Solutions

Svante, a leading innovator in carbon capture and removal technology, and Tenaska, a prominent provider of CO2 transportation and sequestration services, have announced a significant collaboration by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This partnership is set to combine their expertise and resources to deliver cost-effective, fully integrated solutions for carbon capture and storage (CCS) aimed at reducing industrial emissions. The collaboration marks a major step in the decarbonization of various industrial sectors, including pulp and paper, cement, steel, oil and gas, and others, which are some of the largest contributors to global emissions.

Collaboration to Tackle Global Emissions

Through this collaboration, Svante and Tenaska seek to offer industrial customers a clear and feasible path toward achieving their decarbonization goals. The goal is to help industries meet sustainability targets while maintaining operational efficiency. The collaboration is a key initiative to address global industrial emissions and make significant progress toward decarbonizing critical sectors that are difficult to abate through traditional means.

Svante’s technology focuses on capturing CO2 emissions at the source, using its cutting-edge solid sorbent-based carbon capture technology, which facilitates highly efficient and environmentally responsible CO2 capture. Meanwhile, Tenaska will provide the necessary infrastructure for CO2 transportation and storage. By combining their strengths, Svante and Tenaska aim to offer a complete, end-to-end carbon capture and storage solution for industrial emitters.

The MOU is non-exclusive and allows the companies to jointly offer their services to select customers. Svante’s innovative technology will be responsible for the initial CO2 capture process, including CO2 compression, conditioning, and liquefaction. Tenaska will manage the logistics of CO2 transportation and the safe, secure, and permanent sequestration of the CO2 deep underground. Tenaska is already advancing a platform of mid- and early-stage projects across the United States, with nearly 20 injection wells having Class VI permit applications filed across multiple states.

Simplifying the Path to Decarbonization

One of the key goals of the collaboration is to simplify the path to decarbonization for industrial emitters globally. The companies aim to reduce the complexities that often accompany CCS projects by offering a seamless solution that covers the entire value chain of carbon capture, transportation, and storage. Through this partnership, Svante and Tenaska are focused on making it easier for industries to implement CCS solutions, thereby accelerating the transition to a net-zero future.

Key Objectives of the Collaboration

  1. Integrated Carbon Management Solutions: Svante will lead the capture of CO2 emissions at industrial facilities, including all necessary processes like CO2 compression, conditioning, and liquefaction. Tenaska will take responsibility for CO2 transportation and sequestration, ensuring safe and permanent storage deep underground.
  2. North America-wide Outreach and Customer Engagement: The initiative will actively engage with industrial emitters across North America, providing tailored carbon capture and storage solutions to meet the diverse needs of various industries. This outreach aims to foster widespread adoption of CCS technology and contribute to the region’s broader decarbonization goals.
  3. Innovative Project Development: Svante and Tenaska will jointly identify and assess commercially viable opportunities for CCS. By leveraging the technical and operational expertise of both organizations, the partnership will drive innovation in CCS development and explore new ways to support carbon management strategies across industries.

Leadership Insights

The leadership teams of both Svante and Tenaska expressed strong enthusiasm about the collaboration and its potential to drive progress in CCS solutions.

“This collaboration is well aligned with Svante’s mission to make carbon capture accessible for industries worldwide,” said Matt Stevenson, Chief Revenue Officer at Svante. “By combining our technology with Tenaska’s extensive experience in CO2 transportation and storage, we can offer end-to-end solutions that accelerate the transition to a net-zero future.”

Bret Estep, Vice President of Tenaska Development, added, “Recognizing the synergies with our CCS development platform, Tenaska is proud to work with Svante to advance innovative solutions for carbon management. Together, we aim to provide industrial customers with the tools and confidence to achieve their decarbonization goals.”
