Strategic Partnership: GC and WHAUP Optimize Industrial Water Allocation for Sustainable Business Growth

PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) and WHA Utilities and Power Public Company Limited (WHAUP) have solidified their partnership through a collaboration agreement valued at over 1.5 billion baht. This agreement revolves around the procurement of premium industrial water in the Premium Clarified Water project. Under this collaboration, GC will receive an annual supply of 3.5 million cubic meters of high-quality industrial water to cater to its operations within the WHA Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate (Map Ta Phut).

Remarkably, a significant portion of this water, exceeding 60 percent or 2.0 million cubic meters annually, will originate from reclaimed water sourced from wastewater treatment systems. This strategic endeavor emphasizes the significance of natural resource preservation, advocates for sustainable water management practices through efficient utilization, and mitigates the extraction pressure on fresh water sources.

Mr. Pirun Krimwongrut, Chief Operating Officer – Center of Excellence at GC, reiterated the company’s dedication to sustainability. GC is committed to serving as a global exemplar by harmonizing environmental, social, and economic aspects along with principles of good governance (ESG). The company places paramount importance on water resource management, driving forward a sustainable water management strategy known as the One Water Strategy. This strategy aims to slash reliance on current water sources by over 50%, facilitating future business expansion while upholding competitiveness and managing climate change-related risks. Moreover, GC spearheads collaboration across its supply chain to foster investment in advanced innovations and technologies, such as the utilization of treated wastewater through Wastewater Reverse Osmosis (WWRO) to curtail fresh water extraction.

The agreement between GC and WHAUP endeavors to produce 3.5 million cubic meters annually of premium clarified water, with a substantial portion—over 60% or 2.0 million cubic meters—sourced from treated wastewater. Spanning 15 years, this agreement is poised to curtail GC’s water consumption by 352,000 cubic meters annually. This sustainable water management framework capitalizes on cutting-edge innovations and technologies in wastewater treatment and water recycling, amplifying environmental advantages and augmenting societal well-being. Furthermore, it empowers GC’s consumers to partake in water conservation endeavors.

Khun Somkiat Masunthasuwan, CEO of WHA Utilities and Power Public Company Limited (WHAUP), disclosed that as a prominent provider of comprehensive utility and energy management solutions in Thailand, WHAUP has been generating over 25,000 cubic meters daily of industrial water from treated wastewater. Presently, WHAUP has allied with GC to administer reclaimed wastewater and produce 3.5 million cubic meters annually of high-quality industrial water (Premium Clarified Water) for GC’s facilities. This collaboration, valued at over 1.5 billion THB, is slated to commence commercial service delivery in September 2024.

The collaboration between GC and WHAUP is deeply entrenched in a continuous project evolution aimed at enhancing the quality of reclaimed water from wastewater treatment systems, thereby converting it into premium industrial water (Premium Clarified Water). This initiative not only diminishes reliance on natural water sources but also champions efficient water recycling, fostering a circular economy and ensuring sustainable long-term business prosperity.
