PPG Joins ‘Make It Zero’ Initiative to Drive Down Scope 3 Emissions in the DIY Home Improvement Sector
PPGPPG Partners has officially joined Make It Zero, a global initiative aimed at reducing Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the do-it-yourself (DIY) home improvement sector. The program was launched by the European DIY Retailers Association (EDRA) and the Global Home Improvement Network (GHIN), uniting key industry players in a collective effort to decarbonize the retail value chain.
PPG Joins Forces with Global Retail Leaders to Tackle Indirect Emissions
As part of its commitment, PPG’s Architectural Coatings operations in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand have signed on to the initiative’s ambitious decarbonization targets. This strategic move reinforces PPG’s broader sustainability vision and highlights its proactive stance on addressing environmental challenges, particularly those linked to indirect emissions throughout the supply chain.
Scope 3 emissions—those generated from sources not owned or directly controlled by a company, such as those associated with raw material extraction, product use, or end-of-life disposal—are among the most complex and significant contributors to an organization’s carbon footprint. By becoming an active participant in the Make It Zero initiative, PPG joins a growing network of retailers and suppliers who are working collaboratively to define and implement industry-wide solutions to this challenge.
PPG is also contributing to the initiative’s task force, playing a pivotal role in shaping methodologies for carbon data collection, analysis, and reporting. Through this collaborative platform, the company is sharing best practices and helping to develop standardized frameworks for monitoring and reducing emissions. This effort not only drives internal improvement but also supports the broader industry’s shift toward measurable, science-aligned climate action.
“As a key player in the retail DIY sector, we recognize the importance of collaboration across the value chain,” said Sarah Trowse, PPG Customer Sustainability Business Partner for Architectural Coatings. “We share the responsibility to lower the industry’s carbon footprint and are committed to working together with our customers and suppliers to achieve these goals. By lowering our Scope 3 emissions and joining this task force, we’re supporting our customers’ sustainability ambitions, accelerating a lower carbon portfolio of paints and coatings, and creating stronger customer intimacy.”
The initiative is closely aligned with PPG’s corporate sustainability roadmap, particularly its 2030 sustainability targets. These include goals to reduce Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy), and Scope 3 emissions. All of these targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), a globally recognized body that ensures corporate emissions goals are in line with climate science and the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
PPG’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in its continued investment in innovation. The company’s diverse range of coatings and paints not only meet high performance standards but are also formulated to reduce environmental impact throughout their lifecycle. From low-VOC formulations to more efficient manufacturing processes and packaging solutions, PPG is driving forward a more sustainable product portfolio that responds to the evolving needs of environmentally conscious consumers.
By joining Make It Zero, PPG is deepening its collaboration with partners across the DIY home improvement ecosystem—retailers, manufacturers, and logistics providers alike—to address the full life cycle of product emissions. This partnership represents an important step toward system-wide transformation and sets a precedent for other manufacturers looking to align their operations with climate goals.
Through ongoing engagement in initiatives like Make It Zero, and by anchoring its sustainability strategies in science-based targets, PPG is positioning itself not only as an industry leader in coatings but also as a forward-thinking, responsible corporate citizen.
