PPG (NYSE: PPG) has unveiled its 2025 Color of the Year, Purple Basil (PPG1046-7), a bold yet calming dusty violet shade symbolizing adaptability in changing times. Known as Amethyst Shadow or Acai Berry in certain European markets, this versatile hue is a central part of PPG’s 2025 “Kinetic” global color theme, which includes four distinct color palettes.
Purple Basil offers a perfect balance of warmth and mystery, making it an appealing choice for architects and designers alike. “As consumers navigate an era of unprecedented change, movement has become a dominant global theme influencing design trends across industries,” said Vanessa Peterson, PPG global color styling lead for consumer products, Industrial Coatings. “The Kinetic theme reflects the growing need for self-reliance in a fast-paced world and highlights the fusion of nature and science, with innovations like artificial intelligence fostering endless creativity.”
This sophisticated hue fits seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary designs. Its blend of blue and red undertones creates a dynamic energy that complements the 40 paired colors from PPG’s 2025 palettes: Extra Celestial, Bio-Fuse, Artificial, and Earth and Archive.
“We are in a transformative period filled with exciting new possibilities driven by tools that enhance human creativity,” Peterson noted. “Consumers are embracing this shift, with color trends moving away from soft, safe neutrals toward richer jewel tones, deep earthen pastels, and midtones inspired by ancestry.”
In industrial design, Purple Basil and the Kinetic color palettes address consumer demands for innovation, adaptability, and a sense of movement. Whether in consumer products, architectural designs like windows and doors, office furniture, or automotive applications, these colors offer a vibrant and fresh aesthetic.
“Purple Basil is a mid-tone color with neutral undertones, making it rich, multidimensional, and comforting. It’s a warmer statement color that remains slightly desaturated, serving as a nuanced neutral,” added Peterson.
PPG’s 2025 Color of the Year was selected through collaboration among dozens of PPG color stylists. The company’s comprehensive color forecasting process evaluates global social, cultural, and political trends to create a collection that resonates across diverse audiences worldwide.
