PPG Introduces PPG PRIMERON Optimal Powder Primer with Enhanced Zinc Formula

PPG (NYSE) has announced the launch of its new PPG PRIMERON™ Optimal zinc epoxy powder primer, a patent-pending product designed with an optimized zinc content. This innovative primer offers superior transfer efficiency and corrosion protection, meeting stringent ISO C5 corrosivity standards for use in high-humidity and aggressive environments. With a lower specific gravity (2.0 compared to the standard 3.6), PPG Primeron Optimal primer is less dense and easier to apply, requiring about half the amount of product due to its 85% transfer efficiency. This not only reduces costs but also supports sustainability efforts. Importantly, the primer is solvent-free, eliminating the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

“Corrosion protection is a critical factor in the longevity of parts and a major challenge for the coating industry,” said Paul Bradley, PPG’s Manager of Product Development for Industrial Coatings. “PPG Primeron Optimal primer enhances adhesion and corrosion resistance, even in coastal environments, offering a superior balance of properties compared to traditional zinc-rich primers.”

The primer also boasts exceptional edge, face, and scribe corrosion resistance, with excellent adhesion on both smooth and blasted steel. It has shown remarkable durability in lab tests, exceeding 10,000 hours of salt spray performance on blasted steel. The primer is suitable for use on steel, hot-dip galvanized steel, metallized steel, and aluminum, making it ideal for a variety of applications, including trailers, gas tanks, pipes, automotive parts, and machinery.

“PPG Primeron Optimal primer represents a major advancement in corrosion protection, highlighting PPG’s commitment to sustainable solutions and powder coating innovation,” said Shelley Verdun, PPG’s Business Manager for Powder Coatings, Industrial Coatings.

The sustainability benefits of PPG Primeron Optimal primer include reduced waste and material usage. It can be partially cured (gelled) or used in a two-coat, one-bake process, resulting in faster, more energy-efficient finishing that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50%.

PPG Primeron Optimal is part of the new PPG Primeron powder primer series, designed to provide high corrosion resistance across various applications and environments. The series includes:

  • PPG Primeron Optimal: Offers robust corrosion protection, higher transfer efficiency, and a better overall balance of properties.
  • PPG Primeron Legacy: A traditional zinc-rich primer with the strongest corrosion protection.
  • PPG Primeron Auto: Engineered for layered production in automotive and specialty markets.
  • PPG Primeron Edge: Provides best-in-class corrosion protection for substrates with sharp edges, optimized for degassing during the curing process.
  • PPG Primeron Versa: A versatile primer offering strong corrosion protection for a wide range of substrates, including aluminum.
