PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG), a leading chemical producer in Southeast Asia, is continuing its Be Green programme in Thailand for the second year with a clean-up activity at Lat Phrao Canal. The initiative, in collaboration with TerraCycle Thai Foundation (TerraCycle) and local students, aims to promote responsible plastic waste management and reduce plastic pollution in the community.
“The expansion of Be Green beyond Malaysia reflects our commitment to advancing the circular economy in the region,” said Mazuin Ismail, PCG’s Managing Director/CEO. “We aim to empower the next generation to drive positive change by transforming plastic waste into valuable resources. Our journey starts with education, encouraging sustainable habits from a young age to create lasting benefits for the community and beyond.”
The Be Green programme was first introduced in Thailand in 2023, where PCG, through its subsidiary PCM (Thailand) Co. Ltd., partnered with TerraCycle to work with students in removing ocean-bound plastics from the Lat Phrao Canal.
This year’s programme goes beyond clean-up efforts, featuring new activities such as teaching schools how to manage a Waste Bank, providing students with skills in business management, computer software, and environmental conservation. Additionally, TerraCycle will offer a one-year mentorship to selected schools, providing online coaching on sustainability practices and raising awareness about waste reduction and proper sorting. A handbook on Waste Bank management and environmental conservation will also be distributed.
Rungnapa Chinvigai, CEO of PCM (Thailand), highlighted the success of last year’s clean-up, noting that the programme aligns with Thailand’s Roadmap on Plastic Waste Management 2018-2030 by educating the public on responsible plastic waste management.
Launched in 2013, Be Green aims to make a positive societal impact through education and collaborative recycling initiatives. The programme promotes responsible waste management and the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) in schools and local communities, supporting PCG’s New Plastics Economy (NPE) agenda and global circular economy efforts.
Be Green also aligns with PETRONAS’ “Planting Tomorrow” social impact pillar, which emphasizes educating young people on biodiversity and sustainable living.
