Orica is advancing its commitment to sustainability by integrating fully lead-free detonator technology into its electronic blasting systems range. This innovation, which will encompass products like the eDev™ II Neo, uni tronic™ 600 Neo, and i-kon™ III Neo, maintains the high performance and reliability customers expect from Orica’s blasting solutions. By incorporating Orica’s NPED technology, the new lead-free variant eliminates lead azide from the detonator, aligning with the European Union’s stringent REACH regulation standards by excluding Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC).
Angus Melbourne, Orica’s Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the significance of this development in fostering a more sustainable future for the industry. He highlighted Orica’s longstanding commitment to innovation and safety, acknowledging the dedication of teams worldwide in delivering customer-centric solutions.
The journey towards this breakthrough has been ongoing for years, involving rigorous field trials and compliance testing for CE marking within the European Economic Area. Anticipated for availability in Europe by early 2025, the lead-free electronic blasting systems offer benefits beyond environmental compliance. Manufactured in close proximity to European customers, these systems contribute to safety and environmental objectives by eliminating lead from both the production process and potential environmental release. Orica also underscores its commitment to environmental stewardship by exploring avenues to reduce plastic usage in the development of these systems.
James Bonnor, Orica’s Group Executive and EMEA President, highlighted the strategic significance of manufacturing these blasting systems in Sweden, enhancing supply security and proximity to European markets. The Swedish facility, initially focused on assembling standard EBS detonators, will transition to becoming the world’s first assembly line for the fully lead-free electronic blasting range based on NPED technology. Customer trials are slated to commence in mid-2024, underscoring Orica’s ongoing dedication to supporting customers in achieving their environmental and governance objectives through innovative solutions.
