Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials Expands Custom Electrolyte Facility in Madison, Wisconsin
Orbia Advance Corporation S.A.B. de C.V. (BMV: ORBIA) Fluor & Energy Materials* has announced the completion of a major expansion at its Custom Electrolyte facility in Madison, Wisconsin. The facility, dedicated to lithium-ion and other advanced battery chemistries, has seen its production capacity increase by approximately 300%, solidifying Orbia’s position as a leading domestic supplier of high-quality battery electrolytes.
Completion of Expansion
The expansion project was executed in two phases, with the second and final phase completed in early December 2025. This final stage introduced a second 75-liter mixer and a new 200-liter mixer, enabling the facility to operate at full capacity. With these enhancements, the Madison site is now fully operational and prepared to meet growing global demand for battery electrolytes.
Orbia originally opened the Custom Electrolyte facility in August 2024. The launch marked a milestone in domestic production of small- and medium-batch electrolytes tailored to exact specifications for lithium-ion batteries, as well as emerging technologies such as lithium-sulfur, sodium-ion, and other next-generation chemistries. The expansion now allows the company to serve a broader range of industries with greater speed and efficiency.
Supporting Diverse Applications
Since its inception, the facility has supplied electrolytes to hundreds of businesses worldwide. Its products support a wide array of applications, including industrial equipment, medical devices, energy storage solutions, electric vehicles (EVs), Department of Defense projects, lab-scale research, and aerospace technologies.
With this expansion, Orbia is positioned to accelerate innovation across these sectors. The facility’s enhanced production capabilities enable faster response times for custom formulations, facilitating the transition from prototype to commercialization more efficiently.
Fast Lead Times and Global Reach
Orbia’s Custom Electrolyte facility operates on lead times of four weeks or less for most common formulations. This rapid turnaround allows customers to access high-quality battery electrolytes without lengthy delays, whether they are located in North America, Europe, or Asia.
Strategically situated in an urban area of Madison, Wisconsin, the facility benefits from proximity to Chicago, one of the country’s largest logistics hubs. This location enables efficient domestic and international shipping, reducing delivery times and ensuring reliable service for global customers.
Strengthening Supply Chain Resilience
Domestic production of battery electrolytes offers significant supply chain advantages. By reducing reliance on overseas suppliers, Orbia minimizes the impact of international shipping delays and eliminates risks associated with long transit times. This approach extends product shelf-life, reduces the likelihood of excess or obsolete inventories, and enhances overall supply chain resilience.
The expansion reflects Orbia’s commitment to creating a more robust and sustainable supply chain for the rapidly growing battery industry. By producing electrolytes closer to end users, the company not only improves logistics but also contributes to a lower carbon footprint compared with imported products.
Market Outlook and Industry Impact
According to Avicenne Energy, the global battery electrolyte market was valued at approximately $9.5 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $22 billion by 2030. This rapid growth is driven by increasing demand for electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and industrial applications that rely on advanced battery technologies.
Orbia’s expanded facility positions the company to capitalize on this growing market. With tripled production capacity, Orbia can meet increasing demand while supporting the development of new chemistries and innovative energy storage solutions.
Leadership Perspective
Carl Thoemmes, Business Development Director of Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials, commented on the expansion:
This expansion represents a significant step forward in our commitment to advancing the global energy transition. By tripling our production capacity, we’re not only meeting the surging demand for battery electrolytes, we are developing a more robust supply chain and creating more opportunities for innovation and collaboration.
He added:
With advanced capabilities and faster lead times, our plant empowers the battery industry to accelerate the journey from concept to commercialization. At the same time, we are cutting the carbon footprint associated with importing electrolytes and supporting the next generation of sustainable technologies.
Advancing the Energy Transition
The expanded Custom Electrolyte facility aligns with Orbia’s broader mission to support the global energy transition. By producing high-quality electrolytes domestically, the company contributes to the development of sustainable battery technologies and supports industries that are essential to decarbonization efforts worldwide.
The facility’s capability to produce small- and medium-batch electrolytes tailored to specific formulations enables greater flexibility and innovation. Customers can experiment with emerging chemistries such as lithium-sulfur and sodium-ion, fostering the development of next-generation energy storage systems.
Commitment to Innovation
Orbia Fluor & Energy Materials has long emphasized innovation as a cornerstone of its business strategy. The Madison facility’s expansion reinforces this focus, providing the tools and infrastructure needed to advance electrolyte technology.
Through faster production, enhanced scalability, and rigorous quality control, Orbia enables battery developers to accelerate research, optimize formulations, and bring new products to market more quickly. This capability is critical in a rapidly evolving sector where technology development cycles are increasingly compressed.
