Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), a leader in global cruise innovation, has partnered with sustainable serveware provider Drinique to enhance its in-room breakfast service with a new line of reusable bento box-style serveware. Made with 50 percent certified recycled materials, this new serveware offers a compact and convenient breakfast option, eliminating the need for bulky porcelain plates and plastic cling wrap, thus promoting a more sustainable experience.
Drinique’s bento box-style serveware is crafted from Eastman Tritan™ Renew, a durable plastic created through Eastman’s molecular recycling technologies. This process repurposes hard-to-recycle waste, keeping it out of landfills. Designed for the fast-paced food service environments aboard NCL ships, this new serveware will replace traditional porcelain dishes for in-room breakfast service. Initially, the serveware will be introduced on Norwegian Prima® and Norwegian Viva® and is set to roll out across NCL’s entire 19-ship fleet by the end of the year.
Andrew Elliott, President of Drinique, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are thrilled to support companies like NCL in achieving their environmental goals. By utilizing the sustainability and durability of Tritan Renew, we aim to help our partners innovate and enhance their guests’ dining experience while reducing global single-use plastic waste.”
This initiative is part of Norwegian’s broader commitment to sustainability through its global program, Sail & Sustain™. Since 2018, NCL has been a pioneer in eliminating single-use plastic straws across its fleet and private destinations, and in 2020, it removed single-use plastic water bottles. These efforts have already led to the elimination of over 27 million plastic water bottles and 77 million plastic straws.
Mark Kansley, Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations at Norwegian Cruise Line, commented, “In our ongoing effort to reduce single-use plastics on board, we continually seek out new environmentally friendly practices. We are excited to partner with Drinique to introduce these reusable bento boxes across our fleet, reinforcing our mission to deliver exceptional experiences while protecting and preserving the environment.
