Norsk e-Fuel AS, a trailblazer in Power-to-Liquid (PtL) technology, has announced a strategic partnership with Braskem, a global leader in polymers and biopolymers, to explore the integration of e-Naphtha into the plastics value chain. This collaboration aims to accelerate the development of plastics derived from carbon that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere, reinforcing both companies’ commitment to a more circular and sustainable future.

The partnership represents a significant step toward creating closed-loop systems in which carbon is captured, transformed, and embedded into long-lasting products. By combining Norsk e-Fuel’s expertise in PtL technology with Braskem’s extensive experience in polymers and sustainability, the companies aim to unlock new pathways for sustainable plastics that reduce the climate impact of traditional materials.

Power-to-Liquid Technology at Industrial Scale

Norsk e-Fuel is at the forefront of industrializing PtL technology, which converts fossil-free electricity, water, and captured carbon dioxide (CO₂) into synthetic fuels and chemical feedstocks. These synthetic fuels, or e-Fuels, are designed to replace fossil-based fuels in aviation, shipping, and other sectors while enabling significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The company is actively developing large-scale production facilities, with a vision to have at least three plants operational by 2032. Collectively, these facilities are expected to produce over 200,000 tons of e-Fuels annually. Around 25% of this output could be supplied as e-Naphtha, a highly versatile feedstock that plays a crucial role in the production of plastics.

The company already produces I’m green™ polyethylene, a bio-based plastic made from sugarcane ethanol, at an industrial scale. This renewable material demonstrates how circularity and carbon reduction can coexist with high-performance plastics. Braskem also offers mass balance certified solutions for markets where segregated renewable material streams are not yet fully feasible.

Through the potential processing of e-Naphtha into polypropylene and other essential polymers, Braskem intends to expand its portfolio with innovative plastics that have a significantly reduced carbon footprint. The initiative also highlights the growing importance of carbon capture utilization (CCU) in industrial processes. CCU technologies allow carbon to circulate through products instead of being released into the atmosphere, effectively creating a “carbon loop” that transforms emissions into valuable resources. In the context of plastics, this means that the carbon used to produce e-Naphtha and subsequently converted into polymers remains within the product lifecycle, contributing to a truly circular economy.

Norsk e-Fuel’s industrial vision extends beyond pilot projects. By establishing large-scale PtL production sites, the company aims to supply synthetic fuels to aviation and chemical sectors, demonstrating the scalability of carbon-neutral solutions.
