Merck Collaborates on German Research Initiative ‘Semiconductor-X

Merck, a prominent player in science and technology, has joined the “Semiconductor-X” research project, which is dedicated to advancing the digitalization of supply chains within the semiconductor sector. This consortium, spearheaded by Intel Germany and the Fraunhofer IFF (Institute for Factory Operation and Automation), includes over 20 German partners. As a key provider of materials and solutions for the semiconductor industry, Merck will aid in creating digital frameworks and solutions to enhance value chains. The project, with a budget of approximately 30 million euros, receives backing from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) through EU funds under its “Manufacturing-X” initiative. The initiative is scheduled to run until September 2026, with activities commencing post-grant commissioning in May.

“The semiconductor industry is crucial to many other sectors. Projects like Semiconductor-X aim to enhance resilience and promote sustainable resource use through the digitalization of value chains, which is increasingly vital beyond the semiconductor industry itself,” noted Kai Beckmann, Member of the Executive Board of Merck and CEO of Electronics.

“Semiconductor-X” aims to bolster resilience and sustainability in semiconductor supply chains. This involves creating digital twins of supply and value chains and facilitating decentralized, secure data exchanges. By implementing digital solutions and improving the connectivity of various value chain points, the project seeks to strengthen operational and supply capabilities, particularly during crises. The initiative will leverage data models and open-source software within a comprehensive data ecosystem. Additionally, the project aims to develop more sustainable semiconductor manufacturing processes to reduce CO2 emissions, energy usage, and water consumption throughout the value chain.

Merck’s Electronics division provides a broad range of materials and solutions essential for semiconductor manufacturing, covering nearly all stages of wafer processing. The company, positioned at the forefront of the value chain, supports increased collaborative research and partnerships within the industry and academia. For instance, in 2023, Merck and Intel launched a joint academic research program with European institutions to develop sustainable semiconductor manufacturing solutions. In May 2024, Merck also signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster collaborative research between academia and industry in the life sciences sector.
