Linde (Nasdaq: LIN) announced the signing of a long-term agreement with H2 Green Steel to supply industrial gases to the world’s first large-scale green steel production plant. Under this agreement, Linde will invest approximately $150 million to build, own, and operate an on-site air separation unit (ASU) in Boden, northern Sweden. This unit will provide oxygen, nitrogen, and argon to H2 Green Steel’s integrated facility, which employs cutting-edge technology to reduce carbon emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional steelmaking methods.
The new ASU is scheduled to begin operations by 2026 and will also serve Linde’s current and new customers in the local merchant market.
“We are advancing rapidly to accelerate the decarbonization of the steel industry with the construction of our plant in Boden. Air separation plays a crucial role in this effort, providing essential gases for various stages of the steelmaking process,” said Maria Persson Gulda, Chief Technology Officer at H2 Green Steel. “Our progress is the result of strong partnerships. Linde’s technology and operational experience, both globally and in Sweden, made them a natural choice for us.”
“Linde is dedicated to supporting industrial decarbonization through high-quality projects that leverage our unique combination of assets, technology, and expertise,” said Armando Botello, President Regions UK & Ireland and Europe North at Linde. “We are proud to support H2 Green Steel’s groundbreaking project while also enhancing Linde’s network in a growing industrial region.”
In addition to supplying industrial gases, Linde Engineering has been awarded an engineering and procurement contract for a HIPURE™ pressure swing adsorption unit at H2 Green Steel’s Boden plant. This unit will efficiently recover and purify hydrogen from the direct reduction iron furnace’s top gas, minimizing hydrogen losses and increasing the overall efficiency of steel production.
