LG Chem Introduces Eco-Friendly Enhancements to Flame-Retardant Plastics

On August 12, LG Chem announced a breakthrough in eco-friendly flame-retardant materials with its new PFAS-Free PC/ABS product. This innovative material, made from recycled plastics, has achieved a V-0 rating in the UL 94 flame-retardant test, a standard for UL certification in the United States.

PC/ABS, a blend of Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS), is renowned for its enhanced heat and abrasion resistance. The V-0 rating signifies the highest level of flame resistance, requiring the material to extinguish within 10 seconds of a vertical flame application. LG Chem is the first to achieve a V-0 rating or higher for a PFAS-free PC/ABS material.

PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances) are traditionally used for their heat resistance and water- and oil-repellent properties, commonly found in products like cookware, clothing, and cosmetics. However, due to their environmental persistence and potential hazards, there is growing demand for alternatives. LG Chem’s PFAS-free material meets this need by offering high flame resistance without the use of PFAS.

The new material also incorporates post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics, leading to a 46% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional PC/ABS materials. This eco-friendly approach aligns with global trends toward sustainability and environmental responsibility.

LG Chem’s PFAS-Free flame-retardant material is poised for use in various industrial applications, including electronic devices such as laptops and tablets, as well as equipment like inverters and electric vehicle chargers. The company has also secured UL certification for other PFAS-free flame-retardant materials, including PC and PBT.

Steven Kim, Executive Vice President of LG Chem’s Engineering Materials Division, commented, “The shift towards eco-friendly materials, including PFAS-free flame-retardant plastics, is becoming a global trend. We are committed to advancing our research and development to deliver materials that prioritize both customer health and environmental sustainability.
