Kaneka Showcases Green Planet™ as Japan’s Sustainable Tech Highlight at Expo 2025 Osaka

Kaneka Corporation, headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, is set to play a pivotal role at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, by showcasing its innovative biodegradable polymer, Green Planet™. As a supporting and sponsoring company of the Japan Pavilion, Kaneka aims to highlight the potential of sustainable materials in addressing environmental challenges.

Green Planet™: A Step Towards Sustainability

Green Planet™ is a biodegradable polymer developed by Kaneka, derived from biomass materials and carbon dioxide (CO₂). This material is designed to break down into CO₂ and water through the action of microorganisms in various environments, including soil and seawater. By utilizing CO₂ as a raw material, Green Planet™ contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and offers a viable solution to the growing problem of plastic pollution.

Showcasing at the Japan Pavilion

The Japan Pavilion at Expo 2025 will embody the theme “Between Lives,” focusing on the concept of circulation. Kaneka’s Green Planet™ will be featured prominently in two areas.

  • Farm Area: Visitors will encounter vessels made from Green Planet™, utilizing CO₂ in cylinders as a raw material. These vessels exemplify the practical application of biodegradable materials in everyday items.
  • Plant Area: An aquarium display will illustrate the biodegradation process of Green Planet™ vessels, showcasing how they decompose into CO₂ and water through microbial activity. This visual representation aims to educate visitors on the material’s environmental benefits.

Additionally, attendees will receive clear folders made from Green Planet™ as gifts, providing a tangible example of the material’s versatility and commitment to sustainability.

Participation in the ORA Gaishoku Pavilion “UTAGE”

Beyond the Japan Pavilion, Kaneka’s Green Planet™ will also be featured in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) exhibition corner of the ORA Gaishoku Pavilion “UTAGE,” managed by the Osaka Restaurant Management Association. From June 8 to June 21, this exhibition will highlight Green Planet™ as a material contributing to carbon recycling and addressing marine plastic pollution.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Kaneka’s involvement in Expo 2025 aligns with its mission of “Wellness First,” emphasizing the company’s dedication to providing global solutions for a healthier planet. By introducing Green Planet™ to a broad audience, Kaneka aims to foster awareness and adoption of sustainable materials, contributing to the initiative of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.”

Through these efforts, Kaneka demonstrates how innovative materials like Green Planet™ can play a crucial role in creating a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
