IFF Launches Enzyme Technology and Application Labs in Brazil

IFF Expands Innovation and Manufacturing Capabilities in Latin America

International Flavors & Fragrances is strengthening its footprint in Latin America by expanding its manufacturing and innovation capabilities across the region. The company announced new investments aimed at supporting the rapid growth of its health and biosciences (H&B) division, particularly in markets where biotechnology solutions are becoming increasingly important.

As part of this strategic expansion, IFF will transform its existing production facility in Arroito, Argentina, into the company’s first fully integrated fermented enzyme technology center in Latin America. In addition, the company is opening a new home care applications laboratory within its innovation center in Brazil. Together, these initiatives are designed to improve local production capabilities, accelerate innovation, and deliver solutions more effectively to customers across the region.

Latin America has emerged as one of IFF’s fastest-growing markets, driven by increasing demand for biotechnology solutions in sectors such as brewing, animal nutrition, biofuels, and home and personal care. By expanding its presence and capabilities in the region, IFF aims to deliver faster, more reliable, and locally adapted solutions for these industries.

Accelerating Innovation Through Regional Investment

According to Letícia Gonçalves, President of IFF’s Health & Biosciences division, the company’s expansion reflects its commitment to turning scientific innovation into practical solutions that improve everyday life.

“This initiative is about translating science into meaningful impact,” Gonçalves said. “By bringing world-class fermentation technology and application expertise to Latin America, we can accelerate the innovation process for our customers. Ultimately, this leads to better food products, more efficient cleaning solutions, and improved everyday items that enhance quality of life for millions of consumers across the region.”

The company believes that closer proximity to customers and production facilities will allow it to respond more quickly to evolving industry needs while strengthening collaboration with regional partners.

Building a Regional Enzyme Technology Hub

A key element of IFF’s expansion strategy is the transformation of its Arroito plant in Argentina into a regional enzyme technology production center. The project builds on the company’s extensive expertise in fermentation technology, a core component of industrial biotechnology used to produce high-performance enzymes.

Fermentation technology enables the production of specialized enzymes through controlled biological processes. These enzymes play a crucial role in multiple industries, helping improve efficiency, sustainability, and product performance.

With the facility upgrade, IFF will move beyond its previous role of primarily handling final processing and packaging in the region. Instead, the Arroito plant will now support the entire enzyme production process, beginning from the initial stages of fermentation. This shift will allow the company to manufacture enzymes locally, significantly improving production flexibility and reliability.

Local production is expected to provide several advantages. It will enable faster response times to customer requirements, reduce reliance on imported intermediates, and improve the company’s ability to adapt formulations to specific regional needs. Additionally, localized fermentation production helps reduce environmental impact by streamlining supply chains and optimizing resource use.

Industries expected to benefit from the expanded facility include brewing, where enzymes help optimize fermentation and flavor development; animal nutrition, where enzymes improve feed efficiency; biofuels, where they enhance biomass conversion; and home care, where they enable more effective cleaning solutions.

Expanding Application Development in Brazil

Complementing the Argentina facility upgrade, IFF has also established a new Home Care Applications Laboratory within its innovation center in Brazil. The laboratory is designed to support customers in testing and refining enzyme-based solutions under real-world conditions typical of the Latin American market.

The new facility will focus particularly on detergents used in washing machines and dishwashers. Through advanced testing capabilities, the laboratory will allow researchers and product developers to evaluate enzyme performance in different water conditions, temperatures, and cleaning scenarios.

By replicating real consumer usage environments, the lab will enable faster testing cycles, improved formulation accuracy, and more efficient collaboration between IFF scientists and customers. This approach is expected to help companies develop next-generation cleaning products that are both highly effective and environmentally responsible.

Strengthening Regional Collaboration

Deia Vilela, Vice President of IFF Health & Biosciences for Latin America, emphasized that the region’s growing demand for biotechnology solutions makes it a key focus for the company’s future investments.

“Latin America is experiencing rapid growth in biotechnology-driven industries,” Vilela said. “What is particularly exciting is how this momentum is being reinforced by deeper collaboration with customers and regional teams. These partnerships are creating a strong foundation for continued innovation and shared growth in the coming years.”

The company believes that closer integration with regional partners will accelerate product development and strengthen long-term relationships with customers across multiple sectors.

Long-Term Commitment to Biotechnology Growth

IFF’s latest investments underscore its long-standing leadership in industrial biotechnology. With more than four decades of experience in fermentation technology and enzyme development, the company continues to focus on expanding its capabilities to meet evolving global demands.

By strengthening its infrastructure in Latin America, IFF aims to support future growth opportunities across food and beverage production, home and personal care, animal nutrition, and the broader bioindustry sector.

These developments highlight the company’s broader strategy of combining advanced science with local expertise to deliver innovative solutions tailored to regional markets. As demand for sustainable, biotechnology-driven products continues to rise, IFF’s expanded presence in Latin America positions the company to play a significant role in shaping the region’s future industrial and consumer markets.
