The 60 MLD SWRO project marks a strategic expansion for IDE Technologies in India and provides a long-term response to regional water scarcity concerns
IDE Technologies, a global leader in advanced water treatment and desalination solutions, has announced the signing of a significant contract with the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (SIPCOT) to develop a new seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination facility in Tamil Nadu, India. The project marks an important step in strengthening sustainable water infrastructure in the region and addressing long-term water availability needs
The upcoming desalination plant will have a capacity of 60 million litres per day (MLD) and will supply treated water to Mullakadu in the Tuticorin district, supporting municipal and industrial water requirements. Designed to enhance local water security, the facility will play a key role in meeting rising demand driven by population growth, industrial development, and climate-related pressures on freshwater resources
The project will be delivered through a strategic partnership between IDE Technologies and two prominent Indian infrastructure companies—Jindal Water Infrastructure Limited (JWIL) and Vishnusurya Projects and Infra (VPIL). Together, the consortium brings extensive expertise in desalination technology, engineering, construction, and long-term operations, ensuring the plant is developed to global performance and sustainability standards
“Providing reliable and sustainable water solutions to regions facing water stress is central to IDE’s purpose,” said Nayan Shah, Director – Sales & Marketing, IDE India. “This project reflects our commitment to supporting India’s water infrastructure goals while delivering advanced desalination technology that ensures high-quality water for communities and industries. We look forward to working closely with our partners JWIL and VPIL to successfully deliver this facility
The desalination plant will utilize seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) technology, a proven and energy-efficient process widely adopted for large-scale desalination projects worldwide. The system works by applying controlled pressure to seawater, forcing it through specialized semi-permeable membranes that separate dissolved salts and impurities from water molecules. This process produces a reliable stream of potable-quality water, along with a concentrated brine stream that is managed in accordance with environmental standards
IDE Technologies is widely recognized for its expertise in optimizing SWRO systems to deliver high recovery rates, operational efficiency, and cost-effective water production. The company’s desalination facilities are designed to achieve some of the lowest lifecycle water costs in the industry, making them particularly suitable for regions requiring long-term, scalable water solutions. The SIPCOT project was awarded to IDE Technologies following a competitive selection process involving multiple experienced players in the desalination sector. The contract will be executed under a Hybrid Annual Model within a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, combining public oversight with private-sector innovation and operational excellence

Under the agreement, IDE Technologies will be responsible for the design, engineering, and construction of the desalination facility, as well as operation and maintenance for a period of 15 years after commissioning. This long-term operational role ensures consistent performance, system reliability, and adherence to water quality standards throughout the plant’s lifecycle. The project also reinforces IDE’s expanding presence in India, a market with growing demand for sustainable water infrastructure solutions. As coastal regions increasingly turn to desalination to supplement traditional water sources, large-scale SWRO facilities are becoming an integral part of regional water management strategies
Beyond addressing immediate water needs, the project supports broader sustainability objectives by reducing dependence on overexploited groundwater resources and enhancing climate resilience. The integration of advanced process design and operational efficiencies will help minimize energy consumption while maximizing output reliability. IDE Technologies continues to support governments, municipalities, and industrial clients worldwide with comprehensive water solutions, including desalination, water reuse, and large-scale infrastructure development. The Tamil Nadu SWRO project stands as another milestone in the company’s mission to make clean, high-quality water accessible anytime and anywhere, while contributing to long-term water security and economic development.
