Gregory C. Garland Elected to ExxonMobil Board of Directors

Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) announced today that Gregory C. Garland has been elected to its board of directors, effective November 3, 2025. Garland brings to the ExxonMobil board more than four decades of experience in the global energy and chemicals industries, including more than ten years as chairman and chief executive officer of Phillips 66.

“Greg brings to the ExxonMobil board more than a decade of experience as the CEO of respected industry companies,” said Darren Woods, ExxonMobil chairman and chief executive officer. “All of us on the board and within senior management will benefit from his deep expertise in the energy sector, his long history of leadership, and his well-earned reputation for collaboration and candor.”

Woods emphasized that Garland’s appointment supports ExxonMobil’s ongoing commitment to strong governance, strategic growth, and operational excellence. “Greg’s leadership background—particularly in refining, chemicals, and midstream operations—aligns closely with ExxonMobil’s integrated business model,” Woods added. “His perspective will be especially valuable as we continue to strengthen our portfolio, advance lower-emission technologies, and deliver competitive returns for shareholders.”

Joseph Hooley, lead independent director of Exxon Mobil Corporation, echoed Woods’ remarks, noting that Garland’s experience complements the board’s diverse mix of skills and global perspectives. “We’re pleased to welcome Greg to the board as the company continues to focus on developing advantaged assets and executing major projects that enhance value while lowering costs,” Hooley said. “His proven leadership and strategic insight will help ensure ExxonMobil continues to meet the evolving needs of the world’s energy markets while maintaining a disciplined approach to capital allocation and long-term shareholder value.”

Garland joins the board as ExxonMobil continues executing a disciplined strategy to deliver industry-leading returns and reduce emissions from both its operations and products. The company has prioritized developing high-value projects, expanding its presence in low-cost, high-margin resource areas, and leveraging its technology expertise to advance carbon capture, hydrogen, and other lower-emission solutions. Garland’s extensive background in energy manufacturing, global operations, and corporate leadership is expected to further strengthen the board’s oversight of these initiatives.

A Proven Industry Leader

Gregory C. Garland has earned a reputation as one of the energy industry’s most respected and effective executives. He served as chair and chief executive officer of Phillips 66 from its formation in 2012 until 2022 and as executive chair of the company’s board from 2022 to 2024. Under his leadership, Phillips 66 became one of the world’s largest and most successful diversified energy manufacturing and logistics companies, with operations spanning refining, midstream, chemicals, and marketing.

Before leading Phillips 66, Garland served as president and CEO of Chevron Phillips Chemical Company from 2008 to 2010, where he guided the company through a period of strong financial performance and strategic growth. His earlier career included leadership roles across refining, marketing, and chemical operations, giving him deep expertise across nearly every segment of the energy value chain.

At Phillips 66, Garland was widely recognized for his focus on operational excellence, disciplined capital management, and safety performance. He championed initiatives that modernized the company’s refining system, expanded its midstream network, and increased its participation in chemical manufacturing—strategic moves that helped position the company for sustained profitability in a changing energy landscape.

Garland also placed strong emphasis on corporate citizenship, workforce development, and community engagement. During his tenure, Phillips 66 earned recognition for its philanthropic initiatives, safety programs, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. His leadership style—characterized by transparency, accountability, and collaboration—earned respect across the industry and among investors.

Board and Community Involvement

In addition to his extensive corporate leadership experience, Garland has long been active in corporate governance and community service. He has served on the board of directors of Amgen Inc. (NASDAQ: AMGN) since 2013, contributing his strategic insights to one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies. His participation on Amgen’s board reflects his ability to bring cross-industry perspective, strong governance discipline, and a deep understanding of large-scale, science-driven organizations.

Beyond the corporate arena, Garland is deeply committed to education, healthcare, and community development. He currently serves as vice chair of the Barbara Bush Literacy Foundation, where he supports national literacy programs that expand access to education and lifelong learning. He is also a director of the Memorial Hermann Foundation, which advances health and wellness initiatives across the greater Houston region, and a member of the President’s Advisory Council at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, one of the world’s foremost cancer research and treatment institutions.

Through these roles, Garland has demonstrated a sustained commitment to social responsibility and civic engagement, reflecting values that align with ExxonMobil’s focus on corporate citizenship and community partnership.

Strengthening ExxonMobil’s Leadership and Strategic Vision

Garland’s election comes at a pivotal time for ExxonMobil, as the company continues to advance a balanced strategy that integrates traditional energy production with innovative technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ExxonMobil is investing heavily in projects that deliver reliable, affordable energy while supporting global efforts to transition to a lower-emission future.

Recent initiatives include expanding carbon capture and storage (CCS) capacity, advancing hydrogen production technologies, and growing its portfolio of lower-emission fuels. Garland’s deep operational background in refining and chemicals, combined with his leadership experience in large-scale industrial transformation, is expected to complement the company’s strategic direction in these areas.
