Green Plains has commenced continuous production of dextrose syrups at the world’s first commercial Clean Sugar Technology™ (CST™) facility, located in Shenandoah, Iowa. This pioneering system, developed by Fluid Quip Technologies, produces low-carbon-intensity dextrose and glucose corn syrups with up to 40% lower carbon impact than conventional alternatives. These eco-friendly ingredients are intended for use in renewable chemicals, bio-based materials, and food and beverage applications.
“The successful launch of Clean Sugar Technology in Shenandoah, along with the industry-first dextrose from a dry mill, represents a transformative step for Green Plains and the broader sugar industry,” said Todd Becker, President and CEO of Green Plains. “This disruptive advancement in dextrose and glucose manufacturing enables us to meet rising demand with low carbon-intensity solutions. We’re grateful to our dedicated teams, the State of Iowa, and the City of Shenandoah for making this milestone possible, positioning Green Plains as a sustainable leader in industrial fermentation and food production for the bio-economy both in the U.S. and globally.”
The CST™-produced dextrose and glucose syrups have proven effective as feedstocks in trials for bio-products, bio-chemicals, and food ingredients. Green Plains is finalizing product approvals and agreements with multiple partners, with demand currently exceeding the facility’s capacity.
“Clean Sugar Technology allows us to utilize the corn kernel to produce ingredients with a lower carbon footprint than traditional wet milling, supporting the growing demand for dextrose and glucose corn syrups,” added Becker. “These sustainable ingredients are paving the way for innovation in the bio-based economy, from renewable chemicals to beyond.”
Bulk shipments to end-use customers will begin in the coming weeks. The facility has achieved third-party certification for Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), with FSSC 22000 certification expected in the next quarter. Optimization efforts will continue to increase production in the coming months.
