Garut District hits plastic asphalt road goal, ending with 50.2 km coverage.

PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk (Chandra Asri Group), a prominent player in chemical and infrastructure solutions in Indonesia, proudly announces the accomplishment of surpassing the target of 100 kilometers of plastic asphalt roads. This achievement is the result of a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders, including government bodies, private enterprises, and associations. The celebration of this significant milestone takes place in Garut District, where Chandra Asri Group, in partnership with the Bakti Barito Foundation and the Garut District Government, has contributed to the construction of 50.2 kilometers of plastic asphalt roads out of the total 100 kilometers. This initiative, implemented from 2022 to 2023, effectively managed 431.5 tons of plastic waste from the Landfill Site (TPA).

The journey towards this milestone began with the first trial of plastic asphalt in 2018 at the petrochemical factory area owned by Chandra Asri Group in Cilegon City, Banten. Five years later, Garut District emerges as the epitome of achievement, marking the region with the longest coverage of plastic asphalt roads. Through collaborative efforts, this program also aligns with the government’s objectives to reduce waste by 30% and mitigate ocean plastic pollution by 70% by 2025.

By the end of 2023, Chandra Asri Group, in conjunction with its partners, had laid 120.8 kilometers of roads using a mixture of plastic waste, surpassing the initial target of 100 kilometers. The incorporation of plastic waste in these roads not only presents a novel solution but also adds economic value by repurposing 1,086 tons of plastic bag waste. Additionally, each kilometer of plastic asphalt road absorbs approximately 1.6 tons of plastic waste and enhances road durability by 40%.

Drs. H Barnas Adjidin, M.M. M.M.pd Acting Regent of Garut, represented by Drs. H Nurdin Yana MH, Garut District Secretary, highlighted the district’s commitment to implementing plastic asphalt on various road sections, totaling 16.56 kilometers in 2022 and expanding to approximately 33.68 kilometers in 2023. This demonstrates a significant stride towards sustainable infrastructure development in Garut District.

“It is indeed an honor for us in Garut District to be selected as a model for the application of plastic asphalt. We extend our gratitude to the Bakti Barito Foundation and PT Chandra Asri Pacific Tbk for their contribution to this innovative initiative,” explained Barnas.

Edi Rivai, Director of Legal, External Affairs & Circular Economy at Chandra Asri Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to plastic waste management through circular economy principles. He expressed gratitude to the Garut District Government and the Bakti Barito Foundation for their partnership and hoped that this success would inspire similar initiatives across Indonesia.

Fifi Pangestu, Executive Director of Bakti Barito Foundation, commended the collective effort in achieving the longest stretch of plastic asphalt roads in one location. She expressed gratitude to all partners, stakeholders, and the local community for their support in realizing this vision, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in building resilient communities.

The Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI) played a crucial role in providing shredded plastic bag waste for the Garut Plastic Asphalt project, ensuring compliance with technical standards set by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR). This collaboration not only contributes to environmental benefits but also supports sustainable infrastructure development in Garut District.
