Fluor Secures Contract for FEED of Carbon Capture and Storage System at Heidelberg Materials Plant in Germany

Fluor Corporation has been awarded a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract by Heidelberg Materials to support the integration of an advanced carbon capture and storage solution at its cement production facility in Geseke, Germany. The project, known as GeZero, represents a major step in Heidelberg Materials’ decarbonization strategy and aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions in the cement industry, one of the largest industrial contributors to CO₂ emissions.

Fluor’s role in this groundbreaking project will focus on the design and integration of multiple decarbonization technologies at the Geseke facility. The company’s vast expertise in engineering and sustainable solutions makes it well-positioned to assist in the development of this pioneering technology. According to Mike Alexander, the Group President of Fluor’s Energy Solutions business, “GeZero is a flagship project for the decarbonization strategy of Heidelberg Materials, and Fluor is excited to assist with this pioneering technology. Carbon capture and permanent storage are crucial in meeting sustainability goals.”

The GeZero project is based on the second generation of advanced Oxyfuel technology, which is at the forefront of carbon capture methods. The system aims to capture approximately 700,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from the cement production process. This captured carbon will be transported through pipelines or ships to offshore storage sites in the North Sea, where it will be permanently stored, ensuring long-term carbon sequestration and contributing to global climate change mitigation efforts.

Fluor’s FEED contract is a critical early phase of the project, setting the stage for construction, which is scheduled to begin in 2026. The commissioning of the full-scale carbon capture system is planned for three years later. The integration of this innovative technology at the Geseke facility is a significant part of Heidelberg Materials’ commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting global decarbonization efforts within the cement industry.

Fluor’s involvement in this project underscores the company’s continued leadership in sustainable technologies. The company has been a key player in the energy and industrial sectors for decades, providing expertise in engineering, procurement, and construction services for large-scale projects worldwide. With its nearly 34,000 employees and a revenue of $15.5 billion in 2023, Fluor continues to be a vital contributor to solving some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.

The carbon capture and storage technologies implemented in the GeZero project are part of a broader trend of innovation within the cement and energy sectors, as industries work toward meeting ambitious sustainability and emission reduction targets. The ability to capture and permanently store CO₂ is seen as a critical technology for industries that cannot easily transition to zero emissions, including cement, steel, and chemical manufacturing.

Fluor’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its approach to projects like GeZero, where it integrates cutting-edge technology with engineering expertise to create solutions that have a lasting positive impact on the environment. This partnership with Heidelberg Materials is one of many efforts Fluor is undertaking to address the growing need for decarbonization solutions across various industries.

The global urgency surrounding climate change has prompted many industries to invest in technologies that can help reduce their carbon footprint, and Fluor’s work on the GeZero project is a prime example of how engineering and technology can drive sustainability efforts. The successful completion of the carbon capture and storage solution at the Geseke cement plant will be a significant milestone in the industry’s journey toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.
