Evonik and Steinbeis Papier Partner to Lower CO2 Emissions in Recycled Paper Production

Evonik and Steinbeis Papier have entered into an agreement for the supply of Evonik’s carbon-neutral hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for recycled paper production. Steinbeis Papier, a European leader in recycled graphical papers, will use this “Way to GO2”-certified H2O2 to reduce emissions throughout its value chain, supporting the company’s ambitious sustainability goals. Meanwhile, Evonik’s Active Oxygens business will reinvest the proceeds from this partnership into further initiatives aimed at cutting its own carbon emissions.

Steinbeis Papier, known for producing 100% recycled paper, integrates environmental responsibility across its entire process. Its “ReThinking Paper” strategy emphasizes reducing carbon emissions, and the use of Evonik’s carbon-neutral H2O2 aligns perfectly with this objective.

“This collaboration with Steinbeis Papier shows that sustainability can drive business success,” said Christoph Batz-Sohn, Director of Sustainable Transformation at Evonik Active Oxygens. “Our carbon-neutral hydrogen peroxide allows customers to reduce their Scope 3 emissions without altering their logistics or formulations. It’s the same high-quality H2O2 they know and trust.”

Steinbeis Papier’s Sustainability Manager Andreas Steenbock noted that cutting Scope 3 emissions can be difficult but is achievable with the right suppliers. “Evonik’s commitment to sustainability makes them a key partner. Their carbon-neutral H2O2 allows us to meet customer demand for eco-friendly recycled paper while reducing our overall environmental impact.”

The partnership marks a significant milestone, with Steinbeis Papier becoming Evonik’s largest purchaser of carbon-neutral hydrogen peroxide. H2O2 is crucial in the production of recycled paper, providing bleaching power that enhances brightness without harmful byproducts, aligning with the environmental standards of the “Blue Angel” ecolabel, which all Steinbeis papers proudly carry.

Evonik’s Way to GO2 certification is based on a lifecycle analysis of its Active Oxygens production network in Europe. By implementing measures like switching to renewable electricity, a portion of the company’s output can already be classified as carbon-neutral. The sale of these certificates is reinvested to support Evonik’s goal of achieving full carbon neutrality in its global operations by 2040. This certification is externally verified by TÜV Rhein land and undergoes annual reevaluation.
