Flowserve to Provide Advanced Dry Gas Seals for Innovative Carbon Capture Project

Flowserve to Provide Advanced Dry Gas Seals for Innovative Carbon Capture Project, a global leader in flow control products and services for infrastructure markets, has secured a pivotal contract to supply Dry Gas Seals and Dry Gas Seal Systems to support an innovative project by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (“ADNOC”). ADNOC, the state-owned oil and gas giant of the United Arab Emirates, is driving this initiative in collaboration with Celeros Flow Technology (“Celeros”), a prominent name in flow control solutions committed to optimizing performance while reducing environmental impacts.

ADNOC’s Carbon Capture Milestone

In 2023, ADNOC unveiled its plans for one of the largest carbon capture projects in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The project aims to capture and store 1.5 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) annually, an achievement comparable to removing the emissions of more than 326,000 vehicles from the road. This initiative is a cornerstone of ADNOC’s broader decarbonization strategy and involves equipping its Habshan Flowserve to Provide Advanced Dry Gas Seals for Innovative Carbon Capture Project, a global leader in flow control products and services for infrastructure markets, plant with two high-pressure injection packages.

Flowserve’s role in this groundbreaking venture includes delivering its state-of-the-art Dry Gas Seals and Dry Gas Seal Systems, which will be seamlessly integrated into Celeros’ high-pressure injection packages. This collaboration represents a significant advancement, as it will pioneer the first-ever continuous supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) pump injection services for enhanced oil recovery in the market.

A Joint Effort for Decarbonization

“Undertaking a project like this requires ingenuity and close collaboration to navigate complex technical challenges and ensure this system will be efficient, functional, and reliable,” said Lamar Duhon, President of Flowserve Pumps Division. “We are thrilled that through our team’s expertise, along with our joint efforts with Celeros, we have developed a revolutionary solution that exemplifies the dynamic capabilities of our sealing solutions. Guided by our 3D strategy to diversify, decarbonize, and digitize, we are excited to be a part of ADNOC’s ambitious decarbonization journey, furthering both Flowserve’s and Celeros’ commitment to helping the world reduce carbon emissions.”

The deployment of Flowserve’s innovative sealing technology and Celeros’ advanced high-pressure BB5 pump systems will ensure the effective management and transport of captured CO₂. The captured carbon will be transported from ADNOC’s Habshan facility to the Bab Far North Field Development CO₂ Storage Hub via a dedicated pipeline. Once operational, this system will represent a significant leap forward in the application of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies.

Driving the Future of Carbon Capture and Storage

ADNOC has set a bold target to increase its carbon capture capacity to five million tons annually by 2030. This ambitious goal reflects the growing demand for innovative CCS solutions globally, as industries strive to meet net-zero carbon emissions targets. Flowserve’s involvement in this initiative underscores its leadership in the decarbonization market, leveraging decades of expertise to support environmentally sustainable projects.

Flowserve to Provide Advanced Dry Gas Seals for Innovative Carbon Capture Project, a global leader in flow control products and services for infrastructure markets, project highlights the transformative potential of pumps and sealing solutions in sCO₂ applications. By addressing the challenges of handling supercritical CO₂, Flowserve’s Dry Gas Seals and Systems are proving instrumental in advancing CCS technology. The ability to inject sCO₂ into reservoirs for enhanced oil recovery not only helps reduce atmospheric CO₂ levels but also maximizes resource efficiency in the energy sector.
