ELASTOSIL® N 9189: Electrically Conductive Silicone for Power Plant Generators
ELASTOSIL® N 9189 is a one-component, room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV-1) silicone rubber that cures upon exposure to atmospheric humidity, releasing only alcohol during the process. This tin-free formulation offers significant processing advantages, particularly concerning occupational health and safety.
A standout feature of ELASTOSIL® N 9189 is its electrical conductivity, with a specific volume resistivity of 10 ohm-centimeters. This level of conductivity surpasses that of seawater and is comparable to a 10-percent saline solution, enabling efficient dissipation of electrical charges from material surfaces.
The product is particularly suited for use in large power plant generators. In such applications, stator windings composed of copper bars, known as Roebel bars, are installed in the slots of stator laminations. During operation, high electrical field strengths at the slot ends can trigger corona discharges, potentially damaging the primary insulation of the copper bars over time. Bonding these copper bars at the slot exits with ELASTOSIL® N 9189 optimizes the electrical field and potential distribution, thereby protecting the stator from malfunctions.
ELASTOSIL® N 9189 exhibits medium Shore hardness and can withstand temperatures up to 230 °C over extended periods. It adheres to various materials commonly used in the electrical engineering sector without requiring special surface pretreatment. This new grade surpasses its predecessor, ELASTOSIL® N 189, in terms of electrical conductivity and mechanical properties and is set to replace it.
ELASTOSIL® N 2076: Self-Leveling, Flame-Retardant Silicone for Electric Coils
Also showcased at CWIEME 2025, ELASTOSIL® N 2076 is a one-component RTV-1 silicone rubber designed for coating applications on electric coils. Like ELASTOSIL® N 9189, it cures at room temperature upon exposure to atmospheric humidity, releasing only alcohol during curing.
A notable characteristic of ELASTOSIL® N 2076 is its self-leveling property, making it particularly advantageous for coating choke coils, transformer coils, and end windings of relatively small drive motors. The product can be applied by dipping, facilitating uniform coating. Once cured, the silicone layer is resistant to weathering, UV radiation, and heat, providing durable electrical insulation that protects electric coils from moisture, dirt, and deposits.
ELASTOSIL® N 2076 is formulated to be flame-retardant, meeting the requirements of European standard EN 45545-2, which pertains to fire safety in rail vehicles. This compliance makes it suitable for applications in the railway industry, where fire safety is paramount.
The cured product exhibits long-term stability against weathering, moisture, and UV radiation. It maintains its properties under constantly changing climatic conditions and temperatures as high as 180 °C. ELASTOSIL® N 2076 shows good primerless adhesion to many substrates, including glass, ceramics, metals, plastics, powder coatings, and wood-based materials.
