Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) has reached a major agreement with Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) for a large supply of next-generation optical cable. This new fiber-dense cable will more than double Lumen’s U.S. intercity fiber mileage, significantly boosting capacity for major cloud data centers that need to handle the increasing demands of AI workloads and high-bandwidth applications.
As generative AI evolves, the need for fiber connections within data centers has surged, requiring at least ten times more fiber, alongside a robust network to link these data hubs. Under this deal, Lumen will reserve 10% of Corning’s global fiber output for the next two years.
This agreement, the largest cable purchase in Lumen’s history, positions Lumen to meet the network infrastructure needs of leading data center operators for years. Microsoft, which recently announced its investment in Lumen to accommodate growing data center demands, is among the major clients set to benefit.
“Lumen is the network driving AI advancements. As AI’s rise pushes tech companies to secure fiber and bandwidth quickly, this partnership with Corning solidifies our role in building the AI economy’s backbone,” said Kate Johnson, President and CEO of Lumen Technologies. “This collaboration not only designates Lumen as a preferred partner but also secures a substantial supply of cutting-edge fiber for the present and future.”
Lumen boasts North America’s largest ultra-low-loss intercity fiber network, with diverse routes spanning over 50 major cities. The company stands out by continually upgrading its infrastructure with a multi-conduit system, enabling rapid deployment of the latest fiber technology.
Wendell P. Weeks, Chairman and CEO of Corning Incorporated, remarked, “As generative AI drives up bandwidth demands between data centers, we are thrilled to partner with Lumen Technologies. This agreement marks the debut deployment of Corning’s new gen-AI fiber and cable system, which will allow Lumen to fit two to four times the amount of fiber into their existing conduits.”
To support AI with the necessary capacity, performance, stability, and speed, Lumen is developing a digital platform over its physical network, providing cloud-like access to network services. The Private Connectivity Fabric℠ includes dedicated access to existing fiber, installation of new fiber along existing and new routes, and access to Lumen’s digital services.
