Celanese Corporation, renowned globally for its specialty materials and chemical innovations, proudly announces its reception of the esteemed 2024 Sustainability Leadership Award from the American Chemistry Council (ACC). This prestigious accolade celebrates outstanding endeavors in advancing sustainability through exemplary products, technologies, and initiatives.
Within the realm of sustainability, Celanese clinched the award in the “Circularity” category, particularly for its groundbreaking active carbon capture and utilization (CCU) project situated at its manufacturing hub in Clear Lake, Texas. This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. as part of the Fairway Methanol joint venture, is poised to revolutionize environmental stewardship. Projections indicate the annual capture of 180,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) industrial emissions, while concurrently yielding 130,000 metric tons of low-carbon methanol.
Lori Ryerkerk, CEO of Celanese, expressed profound gratitude, stating, “Our vision at Celanese is to enhance the world and everyday life through our people, chemistry, and innovation. This award is a testament to that vision.” Emphasizing the project’s transformative impact, Ryerkerk highlighted its role in empowering customers to achieve previously elusive sustainability objectives.
The CCU initiative orchestrates the conversion of CO2 industrial emissions, sourced from both Celanese and external entities, into methanol utilizing reduced-carbon-intensity hydrogen. This methanol, a vital building block in downstream production, facilitates the creation of an array of ECO-CC products, thus reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuel-based raw materials. The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) recently bestowed certification upon Low Carbon CCU Methanol under its Carbon Footprint Certification (CFC) system, further validating Celanese’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Mark Murray, Senior Vice President of Acetyls at Celanese, echoed the sentiment of pride and gratitude, stating, “We are honored to receive this incredible recognition from ACC. Our teams have worked diligently to offer sustainable solutions that transcend industries.” Murray expressed optimism for the future, envisioning a trajectory wherein ECO-CC products play a pivotal role in advancing the circular economy.
ACC’s Sustainability Leadership Awards, premised on four priority areas including Circularity, exemplify the industry’s dedication to sustainability. An impartial judging panel comprising sustainability experts from academia, nonprofits, and media evaluated initiatives based on criteria such as innovation, impact, and alignment with sustainability principles and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
