CarbonFree Unveils Zero-Carbon Mineral to Cut Product Carbon Footprints

CarbonFree has introduced endurocal™, the world’s first zero-carbon mineral designed to replace traditional calcium carbonate in various industries, including plastics, paints, and paper. This innovation provides a sustainable alternative, leveraging carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions that would otherwise be wasted.

How It Works

Using its proprietary SkyCycle™ technology, CarbonFree captures CO₂ from industrial emissions, converting it into high-quality calcium carbonate. This product is chemically identical to traditional calcium carbonate but is produced without net carbon emissions. Notably, applications of calcium carbonate, such as in architectural paint, securely store the CO₂, ensuring long-term carbon capture.

Market Impact

CarbonFree plans to position endurocal as a replacement for precipitated and ground calcium carbonate in the U.S. market, valued at approximately 30 million metric tons annually. The launch aligns with a growing demand for sustainable materials in commercial manufacturing.

Scaling Decarbonization

CarbonFree is collaborating with U.S. Steel to integrate SkyCycle technology at its Gary Works Blast Furnaces by 2027. This initiative aims to capture 50,000 tons of CO₂ annually, contributing to endurocal production. The project also recycles calcium from steelmaking slag, further reducing environmental waste.

Environmental Significance

The initial scale of the U.S. Steel collaboration is expected to:

  • Offset CO₂ emissions equivalent to 12,000 passenger cars annually.
  • Prevent approximately 150,000 metric tons of CO₂ from conventionally produced calcium carbonate each year.

CarbonFree’s CEO, Martin Keighley, emphasized, “Companies can now use cost-competitive chemicals while decarbonizing their supply chains.”
