California University of Science and Medicine Celebrates 2025 MD Match Day Achievements
The California University of Science and Medicine (CUSM) marked a significant milestone in the academic journey of its 2025 graduating class during the highly anticipated Match Day event. On March 21, 2025, the medical school celebrated the successful residency placements of its Doctor of Medicine (MD) graduates, with many of them securing positions in their chosen specialties.
A Day of Emotion and Accomplishment
Match Day is a key event for every graduating medical student, symbolizing the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and resilience. It is during this event that students across the country find out where they will complete their medical residencies, ranging from three to seven years, depending on their specialty.
“Match Day is probably the most emotional day in the medical school journey,” said Paul Lyons, MD, Dean and President of CUSM. “After years of commitment and challenges, the door to the next chapter is opened. I am thrilled that so many of our talented students will remain in our region and many will serve as residents in our partner hospitals.”
CUSM’s Regional Impact
A notable aspect of the 2025 Match Day results is the fact that many of CUSM’s graduates will remain in Southern California to continue their medical training. Sixty-six percent of the graduates will complete their residencies in the region, with 28% staying within the Inland Empire.
Of the 2025 graduates, 26 will perform their residencies at CUSM’s partner hospitals, which include Riverside Community Hospital, Riverside University Health System, Eisenhower Medical Center, and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. These institutions have been instrumental in supporting CUSM’s clinical training programs, providing students with essential hands-on experience through teaching rotations and clerkships.
“Having our students stay in the region and train at our partner hospitals speaks to the strength of the local healthcare ecosystem and our relationships with these institutions,” said Dr. Lyons. “It also provides our graduates with the opportunity to contribute to the community they’ve trained in.”
A Tradition of Celebration
CUSM held a campus celebration to honor the students and their families, a time-honored tradition for many medical schools. Graduating students, along with their loved ones, gathered to share in the excitement of their residency placements and reflect on their educational journey. The event was an opportunity for students to celebrate not only their personal achievements but also the culmination of the education and mentorship they received throughout their medical training.
“Our mission to educate compassionate healthcare providers comes to fruition on each and every Match Day,” Dr. Lyons shared. “It is a privilege to contribute to the journey of these dedicated students and to share their joy on this momentous day.”
High Match Success Rate and Competitive Specialties
CUSM’s 2025 Match Day results reflect the institution’s commitment to excellence in medical education and training. The school achieved an impressive 97% match rate, a testament to the quality of its students and the strength of its training programs.
Residency placements spanned across the country, with many graduates securing positions in some of the most competitive specialties in medicine. These included Anesthesiology, Neurosurgery, ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat), Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, and Dermatology. CUSM graduates also performed well in other high-demand fields, such as Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Neurology.
