Brenntag Introduces 100% Green Caustic Soda in Netherlands and Belgium at Comparable Price

Brenntag, the global leader in chemicals and ingredients distribution (ISIN DE000A1DAHH0), has become the first distributor in the Netherlands and Belgium to switch from conventionally produced Caustic Soda to 100% sustainably produced Green Caustic Soda. This move highlights Brenntag’s leadership in promoting sustainability within the chemical industry, with more regions expected to follow suit.

Caustic Soda (sodium hydroxide) is widely used in various industries, including aluminum production, pulp and paper, water treatment, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. The new Green Caustic Soda is produced using 100% renewable energy, thanks to Brenntag’s collaboration with Nobian, a key supplier. Through a chlor-alkali electrolysis process, which transforms sodium chloride into caustic soda, hydrogen, and chlorine, Nobian uses wind and solar power to achieve a fully renewable production method.

This Green Caustic Soda is a direct replacement for its conventional counterpart and requires no changes to existing processes or infrastructure. Even more, it is available at a comparable price, making it a viable, sustainable alternative. The product comes with International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), ensuring its green credentials. It offers a carbon savings potential of approximately 65%, reducing CO2 emissions by about 40,000 tons annually in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Although Green Caustic Soda significantly reduces carbon emissions, some emissions remain linked to raw materials, transportation, warehousing, and packaging. Brenntag mitigates these through additional sustainable solutions and offers customers the “CO2Xplorer” tool for calculating and exploring certified CO2 reduction alternatives.

Nicolas Lehmann, Regional President Brenntag Essentials EMEA West, emphasized Brenntag’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “When business opportunities arise, we take the lead, benefiting our customers, the environment, and Brenntag.”

Markus Mingenbach, Senior Vice President at Nobian, added, “This agreement strengthens our partnership with Brenntag and supports our shared goal of driving sustainability throughout the value chain, helping customers reduce their carbon footprint.
