BASF’s OASE Blue Aids Taiwan Carbon Capture Project

In a significant stride toward sustainable energy solutions, BASF has entered into a license agreement with Carbon Cap Applications Technology Co. (CCAT) to deploy its OASE® blue gas treatment technology for a carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative at Taiwan Power Company’s (Taipower) Taichung Power Plant Carbon Reduction Technology Park. This collaboration marks a pivotal development in Taiwan’s efforts to mitigate carbon emissions and transition toward cleaner energy production.

Project Overview

The CCS project, initiated in late 2023, aims to capture approximately 2,000 tons of CO₂ annually during its initial phase. This pilot endeavor serves as a foundational step toward a more ambitious goal: the potential development of a demonstration plant capable of capturing up to one million tons of CO₂ per year. Such scalability underscores the project’s significance in Taiwan’s broader environmental strategy.

OASE® Blue Technology

BASF’s OASE® blue technology is specifically engineered for flue gas carbon capture from various industrial sources, including fossil fuel power plants, steam reformers, waste incinerators, and the cement industry. The technology boasts high CO₂ capture rates exceeding 90%, coupled with cost efficiency due to its low energy and amine consumption. Its flexible operating range allows for easy scalability and modularization, making it adaptable to different industrial settings. Additionally, OASE® blue can be tailored to achieve high CO₂ purity levels suitable for applications such as food-grade CO₂ production.

Strategic Collaboration

The partnership between BASF and CCAT combines BASF’s proven gas treatment technology with CCAT’s advanced engineering solutions. Daniel Yao, Managing Director of CCAT, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in promoting sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions. He stated, “We are honored to undertake Taiwan’s first carbon capture commercial demonstration project and collaborate with BASF, utilizing its advanced OASE® blue technology. This partnership aims to enhance the technical level and outcomes of environmental protection projects.

Lawrence Loe, Director of OASE® Gas Treating Excellence at BASF, highlighted the project’s role in accelerating the transition to a more sustainable energy industry. He remarked, “This project will serve as another exciting reference plant for us, showcasing how BASF’s OASE® blue carbon capture technology enables our customers, such as Taipower, to achieve their CCS targets.”

Future Prospects

The captured CO₂ in the current phase will be sequestered at the Taichung Power Plant. Looking ahead, the feasibility of sequestering CO₂ in Taiwan’s offshore strata will be evaluated, potentially expanding the project’s impact. This forward-looking approach aligns with global trends in CCS, where offshore storage is increasingly considered a viable option for large-scale carbon sequestration.
