Avantor, Inc. (NYSE: AVTR), a leading provider of critical products and services to the life sciences and advanced technologies industries, has introduced two innovative products designed to enhance the gene therapy harvest process sustainably: J.T.Baker® Cell Lysis Solution and J.T.Baker® Endonuclease.
“These products are instrumental in helping gene therapy manufacturers optimize their harvest processes while ensuring the quality and integrity of valuable viral particles,” said Benoit Gourdier, Executive Vice President of Bioscience Production at Avantor. “They also meet the increasing demand from biopharmaceutical customers for environmentally sustainable solutions.”
Developed by Avantor scientists, J.T.Baker® Cell Lysis Solution serves as a safe and efficient alternative to Octoxynol-9, a substance listed by the European Chemicals Agency as a “substance of very high concern” under REACH regulations due to its potential toxicity to aquatic life. The solution is biodegradable and exhibits low ecotoxicity, making it ideal for releasing adeno-associated virus (AAV) from host cells during gene therapy workflows. Avantor® studies have shown that the solution enhances viral vector release efficiency across various cell densities and temperatures, while safeguarding viral particles from damage during processing.
As a ready-to-use reagent that requires no refrigeration or special preparation, J.T.Baker® Cell Lysis Solution simplifies the harvest process and reduces contamination risks by eliminating the need for pre-dilution and filtration, thereby significantly lowering bioburden risk. Its high-concentration formula also reduces viscosity and foam formation, optimizing bioreactor space utilization.
When paired with J.T.Baker® Endonuclease, which effectively removes residual impurities, these solutions streamline the harvest process further, reducing steps and enhancing efficiency. Together, they offer robust DNA clearance and minimize aggregation, with customizable options available in a range of cGMP grade sizes to suit different scales of operation.
Avantor’s J.T.Baker® Cell Lysis Solution and J.T.Baker® Endonuclease are part of a comprehensive lineup of modular and scalable chemical and fluid handling solutions. For more information about these products, please visit our website.
