Air Products (NYSE: APD), a leading player in liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology and equipment, proudly announces the successful completion of performance testing for its innovative dual mixed refrigerant LNG Process technology (AP-DMR™) and equipment at the Coral South floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) plant in Mozambique, Africa. Surpassing expectations, the technology has achieved LNG production exceeding 3.4 million tons per year.
The decision to implement Air Products’ proprietary AP-DMR LNG Process stemmed from its exceptional efficiency, dependable operation, and compact design. Notably, the AP-DMR process boasts superior efficiency compared to other LNG processes in floating service, thanks to its utilization of aeroderivative machinery, resulting in lower carbon intensity. Coral South FLNG marks Mozambique’s inaugural operational LNG venture and Africa’s pioneering deep-water FLNG project, standing as the world’s second-largest FLNG facility.
Air Products’ involvement in the Coral South project dates back to 2013, commencing with conceptualization and culminating in the selection of the AP-DMR LNG process technology and equipment. This includes the provision of two proprietary coil-wound main cryogenic heat exchangers (CWHEs), facilitating precooling and liquefaction within the facility.
Fabrication of the CWHEs for the Coral South project took place at Air Products’ LNG equipment manufacturing facility in Port Manatee, Florida. Additionally, Air Products offered expert technical advisory services spanning installation, commissioning, start-up, and performance testing.
Dr. John Palamara, Air Products’ General Manager – LNG, expressed pride in the company’s pivotal role in this landmark project, emphasizing the successful performance testing as a testament to the collective expertise and experience across various facets of the LNG business. Notably, Air Products’ AP-DMR LNG Process has also been chosen for the Energía Costa Azul LNG land-based project in Mexico, currently undergoing construction.
With a robust 15-year FLNG development and marinization program, Air Products has honed its expertise in offshore LNG projects, ensuring equipment and processes meet stringent offshore conditions. This commitment has seen Air Products supply liquefaction technology and equipment to all four of the pioneering deep-water, offshore FLNG projects.
Celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its Port Manatee facility, Air Products has reinforced its commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the LNG industry through expansions and investments. Air Products’ LNG technology remains instrumental in meeting global energy demands sustainably, liquefying natural gas for consumer and industrial use.
Notably, Air Products’ LNG process technology and equipment serve as the core of LNG production plants globally, facilitating the economic shipping and eventual re-gasification of LNG for energy applications. With a significant market share, Air Products continues to provide essential process technology and equipment across various segments of the LNG industry, underscoring its vital role in meeting the world’s energy needs.
