North American Helium Highlights Need for Stable Supply Amid Qatar Disruptions

North American Helium Inc. has commented on the latest global helium supply challenges following production outages in Qatar, emphasizing the need for a more diversified and secure supply chain for the critical element. The company noted that recent interruptions at major helium production facilities in Qatar—one of the world’s leading suppliers—have once again exposed structural vulnerabilities in the global helium market.

Industry analysts say the disruptions could lead to significant supply shortages worldwide. If the current situation persists, it could contribute to what many observers are calling the potential fifth global helium shortage in the past two decades. These recurring shortages underscore how heavily the global market depends on a limited number of large-scale production projects, many of which are tied to hydrocarbon operations in geopolitically sensitive regions.

Nicholas Snyder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of North American Helium, said the latest developments should prompt a broader reassessment of how helium is produced and distributed worldwide.

“This situation should serve as a wake-up call for the industry,” Snyder said. “As helium becomes increasingly important for technologies such as semiconductor manufacturing, space exploration, and other strategic sectors tied to national security, the industry must reconsider its reliance on a small number of major supply sources. To create long-term stability, the global helium market needs a more diversified production base, a shift toward geopolitically stable regions, and stronger deliverable storage capacity.”

Helium plays a vital role in many advanced technologies and industrial processes. It is widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, medical imaging systems such as MRI machines, space programs, and various scientific research applications. Because of its unique physical properties, including extremely low boiling temperatures, helium has few viable substitutes in many of these critical uses.

North American Helium was founded in 2013 with the goal of addressing the growing demand for reliable helium supplies. The company focuses on developing new production sources that are not dependent on traditional hydrocarbon extraction. Instead, NAH produces helium from nitrogen-rich reservoirs, allowing the company to operate smaller, modular production facilities that are independent of oil and gas projects.

According to the company, this production model provides greater flexibility and resilience within the supply chain compared with traditional large-scale helium production, which often occurs as a byproduct of natural gas processing.

Transporting helium presents its own set of challenges. The gas is most efficiently shipped in liquid form, which must be stored at extremely low temperatures—approximately minus 269 degrees Celsius. At such temperatures, even small changes in conditions during transport can cause helium to warm and evaporate, leading to product loss through boil-off and venting.

Because of these limitations, maintaining large volumes of helium in storage near end markets can be technically difficult and expensive. As a result, the global supply chain relies heavily on the advanced logistics systems operated by major industrial gas companies. These distributors manage specialized containers and transportation fleets designed to handle the unique requirements of liquid helium.

While distribution systems are generally efficient, industry experts note that most shortages have historically originated from upstream production constraints rather than logistics failures. When a small number of large supply sources experience disruptions, the impact can quickly ripple across the global market.

North American Helium believes that expanding the number of production sources—especially in politically stable regions—remains one of the most effective ways to reduce supply risks and strengthen the resilience of the global helium market. By spreading production across more projects and locations, the industry can reduce its exposure to disruptions at any single facility or region.

The company is currently advancing several development initiatives aimed at increasing its production capacity. North American Helium plans to bring additional facilities online during the year in order to better support customers and contribute to improved stability in global supply.

In addition, the company is working on plans to develop Canada’s first helium liquefaction facility. The project is intended to enhance the reliability and resilience of the North American helium supply chain by allowing locally produced helium to be liquefied and distributed more efficiently to domestic and international markets.

Through these efforts, North American Helium says it aims to play a larger role in supporting stable, long-term access to helium—an increasingly vital resource for modern technology and global industry.
