BASF Launches Elastollan® FR TPU Production in Shanghai

BASF has announced a significant expansion of its thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) capabilities in Asia, revealing that its Shanghai production site is now qualified to manufacture Elastollan® Flame-Retardant (FR) TPU grades. This latest development strengthens the company’s regional supply network and enhances its ability to deliver advanced flame-retardant material solutions to customers across Asia Pacific.

The qualification of the Shanghai facility to produce Elastollan® FR grades marks an important milestone in BASF’s localization strategy. It follows the successful 2023 localization of the company’s Halogen-free Flame-Retardant (FHF) TPU series at the same site. By adding the FR series to its existing FHF production, BASF now offers a fully localized and comprehensive portfolio of flame-retardant TPU solutions in the region.

Thermoplastic polyurethane is widely valued for its unique combination of flexibility, durability, abrasion resistance, and mechanical strength. When enhanced with flame-retardant properties, TPU becomes particularly suitable for demanding applications where fire safety standards are critical. BASF’s Elastollan® FR grades are engineered to provide superior flame-retardant efficiency while maintaining excellent physical and mechanical performance, enabling manufacturers to meet increasingly stringent safety regulations without compromising product quality.

The expansion of local FR TPU production is especially significant for key cable-related sectors experiencing rapid growth and evolving regulatory requirements. Industries such as industrial automation, robotics, and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure require materials that not only deliver high performance under mechanical stress but also comply with rigorous fire safety standards. By producing both FHF and FR TPU grades locally in Shanghai, BASF can now respond more quickly and flexibly to the technical and compliance needs of customers in these segments.

Industrial automation and robotics applications often involve continuous movement, tight bending radii, and exposure to demanding operating conditions. Cables used in these environments must maintain flexibility and durability over extended service lives while also meeting flame-retardancy standards to ensure workplace safety. Similarly, the rapid expansion of EV charging infrastructure has heightened demand for high-performance cable materials that can withstand outdoor conditions, mechanical wear, and elevated temperatures, all while adhering to strict fire safety regulations. BASF’s localized FR TPU solutions are designed to support manufacturers in meeting these complex requirements.

In addition to cable applications, the availability of locally produced FR grades opens new opportunities in specialty tubes, hoses, and belt sectors. These applications often demand materials that combine mechanical robustness with flame-retardant performance, particularly in industrial and transportation environments. The enhanced portfolio positions BASF to support customers in developing innovative solutions for these growing markets.

Commenting on the development, Rohit Roop Ghosh, Vice President, Business Management TPU, Performance Materials Asia Pacific at BASF, emphasized the strategic importance of the milestone. He noted that local production of FR grades that combine superior flame-retardant efficiency with excellent mechanical properties allows BASF to respond more rapidly to specific technical requirements in the regional market. At the same time, it strengthens the company’s competitive position in strategic growth segments across Asia Pacific.

Localization also offers additional benefits beyond faster response times. By producing materials closer to customers, BASF can reduce supply chain complexity, improve delivery reliability, and enhance collaboration with regional partners. This proximity supports tailored product development and technical service, enabling customers to address specialized flame-retardant needs with greater agility and confidence.

The announcement reflects BASF’s broader commitment to supporting sustainable and high-performance solutions worldwide. As industries transition toward electrification, automation, and digitalization, demand for advanced materials that balance safety, performance, and compliance continues to grow. Through ongoing investment in regional production capabilities and innovation, BASF aims to help customers navigate these transitions effectively.
