Siam Paragon First Thai Mall to Convert Used Cooking Oil to Biofuel

GC and Siam Piwat Expand “From Kitchen to Creation” Project

PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), a global chemical leader and Thailand’s first commercial producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has announced a strategic partnership with Siam Piwat Group to scale up the “From Kitchen to Creation” project. The initiative collects used cooking oil (UCO) from restaurants within Siam Paragon and channels it into GC’s biorefinery, transforming it into clean energy and high-value bio-products. With this collaboration, Siam Paragon becomes the first shopping mall in Thailand to participate in the program.

Expanding the Circular Economy Model to Commercial Malls

The project’s expansion represents a significant step beyond GC’s initial collaborations with local communities and government networks. The focus now includes commercial restaurants in major shopping malls, creating a systematic pipeline for UCO to flow directly into GC’s biorefinery value chain. Following the pilot at Siam Paragon, the program has extended to Siam Center and Siam Discovery, delivering up to 800 kilograms of UCO per month for processing into sustainable products.

This growth exemplifies the integration of circular economy principles into Thailand’s retail and hospitality sectors, turning restaurant waste into valuable resources while reducing environmental impact.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Mr. Ratchada Sawasdirak, Senior Vice President – Refinery, GC Refinery Business Unit, explained, “The ‘From Kitchen to Creation’ project leverages GC’s expertise as Thailand’s first commercial SAF producer. By using used cooking oil as feedstock, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 85% compared to conventional aviation fuel, while producing biochemicals and bioplastics with high added value.”

This initiative not only supports the circular economy but also contributes to cleaner energy production and sustainable materials, demonstrating how industrial processes can convert everyday waste into tangible benefits for society and the environment.

Siam Paragon: Thailand’s First Retail Partner in the Project

“Siam Paragon’s participation marks the expansion of our circular economy model into the business sector,” said Mr. Sawasdirak. “The mall’s engagement transforms food waste into resources that feed directly into our biorefinery, highlighting the practical potential of sustainable waste management in commercial spaces.”

Ms. Naratipe Ruttapradid, Chief Operating Officer of Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., added, “Siam Piwat is committed to integrating sustainability across all operations. Partnering with GC on the ‘From Kitchen to Creation’ project reflects our ‘Siam Piwat 360° Waste Journey to Zero Waste’ initiative, which aims to achieve zero waste to landfill by 2040. By redirecting used cooking oil from our restaurants into the biorefinery, we prevent environmental harm and create a valuable resource from waste.”

Empowering Restaurants and Consumers in the Circular Economy

The project allows restaurants within Siam Piwat malls to actively participate in the circular economy. By contributing UCO, restaurant operators help reduce environmental impact while supporting Thailand’s transition to clean energy. The initiative also encourages consumers to engage with sustainable practices, turning everyday choices into meaningful contributions toward environmental balance.

“This project not only enhances systematic waste management but also empowers our partners and the wider community to take part in sustainable solutions,” said Ms. Ruttapradid.

GC’s Role in Advancing Biorefinery and Sustainable Products

The collaboration emphasizes GC’s leadership in creating an integrated biorefinery value chain capable of producing SAF, biochemicals, and bioplastics. These sustainable alternatives can be used across industries, replacing conventional materials and fuels while reducing carbon footprints.

Through this project, GC showcases its commitment to the circular economy by linking commercial-scale waste collection to industrial bio-production. This approach ensures that resources are continuously reused and environmental impact is minimized, setting a model for responsible industrial practices in Thailand and beyond.

Siam Piwat’s Leadership in Sustainable Mall Operations

As the developer and operator of world-class retail destinations, Siam Piwat demonstrates that shopping malls can play an active role in environmental stewardship. By joining the UCO collection initiative, Siam Piwat malls serve as practical platforms for sustainability, encouraging retailers and visitors to adopt eco-conscious behaviors.

The partnership highlights how corporate spaces can integrate innovative waste management strategies, contributing to Thailand’s long-term environmental goals while also educating and inspiring the community to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Driving Thailand’s Long-Term Sustainability

Ultimately, the collaboration between GC and Siam Piwat reflects a shared vision: transforming everyday food waste into clean energy and sustainable materials. By engaging multiple stakeholders—from restaurant operators to mall visitors—the program fosters active participation in the circular economy, promoting environmental awareness and practical sustainability measures.

The “From Kitchen to Creation” initiative is a tangible example of how industrial innovation, commercial operations, and community engagement can align to restore environmental balance, reduce waste, and create economic and ecological value for Thailand’s future.
