WACKER Unveils Silicone-Based Innovations for Electric Motor Protection at CWIEME
WACKER is set to showcase its cutting-edge silicone-based specialty resins tailored for impregnating electric motors at CWIEME, the premier international trade fair for coil winding, insulation, and electrical manufacturing. The event, scheduled from May 14-16 in Berlin, Germany, promises an exciting platform for unveiling advancements in electrical insulation technology.
Among the highlights at WACKER’s booth will be a range of products designed for various impregnation processes, including trickle impregnation, dipping, and vacuum techniques. Leading the lineup is the room-temperature-curing silicone rubber, ELASTOSIL® N 2076, offering robust protection for electrical coil windings against moisture and environmental factors.
Key among the offerings are two silicone resins taking the spotlight: SILRES® H60 A/B and SILRES® H62 C, both engineered specifically for impregnating electric motors. SILRES® H60 A/B, a fast-curing two-component phenyl silicone resin, stands out for its rapid gel formation during thermal curing, leading to a thermoset with a hardness of 65 Shore D. Notably, it is solvent-free and devoid of reactive crosslinking agents, ensuring direct usability.
With a gel time of approximately 13 minutes at 150°C, SILRES® H60 A/B achieves full curing in just six hours at this temperature. At 180°C, the gel time reduces to five minutes, with complete curing in a mere two and a half hours. The transparent cured resin boasts a non-tacky hydrophobic surface, coupled with excellent dielectric strength (27 kV/mm) and robust chemical resistance, making it an ideal electrical insulator capable of withstanding temperatures up to 200°C.
Meanwhile, SILRES® H62 C, a phenyl silicone resin with a proven track record spanning decades, continues to excel as an impregnating agent, particularly in traction motors for electric rail vehicles and hybrid/electric cars. Offering ease of application without solvents or reactive diluents, this liquid formulation, applied typically at temperatures between 60 and 80°C, undergoes curing between 170 and 200°C. Notably, its inhibitor delays the curing reaction, ensuring liquidity until the motor winding is fully saturated, making it ideal for classic impregnation processes like dipping or vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI).
In addition to impregnation solutions, WACKER introduces ELASTOSIL® N 2076, a room-temperature-curing silicone protective coating compliant with fire protection standards for rail vehicles. This single-component product, upon exposure to adequate humidity, forms a flexible, medium-hardness elastomer, providing long-term protection against moisture, dirt, and deposits for electrical windings in transformers or choke coils. Notably, it boasts weather and UV resistance, electrical insulation, and heat resistance, making it suitable even for winding head protection in traction motors operating at temperatures up to 200°C.
ELASTOSIL® N 2076 meets the stringent fire protection requirements outlined in the European standard EN 45545-2, earning approval for internal components under requirement set R22 and hazard levels HL1 and HL2. Moreover, it extends its suitability to external components, meeting the highest hazard level HL3 under requirement sets R23 and R24. WACKER continues to spearhead innovations in silicone-based solutions, ensuring enhanced performance and reliability across diverse applications in the electrical manufacturing industry.
