Dr. Adeyemi Adeleye, an assistant professor at Columbia University’s Department of Earth and Environmental Engineering, has been honored with the Agilent 2024 Early Career Professor Award. This accolade recognizes his contributions to environmental health and sustainability through the development of green analytical technologies and eco-friendly laboratory practices.
The 2024 award spotlighted advancements in sustainability and green chemistry, areas where Dr. Adeleye’s research excels. His work involves using engineered nanoparticles made from earth-abundant elements like iron, sulfur, and silicon to remediate persistent environmental pollutants such as arsenic, lead, and PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). He is also exploring methods to integrate soil remediation with carbon sequestration, reducing the overall environmental footprint of these processes.
“This award acknowledges our efforts and motivates us to continue striving for excellence,” Dr. Adeleye remarked. He emphasized the urgency of addressing heavy metal contamination, which poses significant threats to human health and food safety. The support from Agilent, he noted, will further his team’s mission to develop sustainable solutions to these challenges.
Agilent Technologies highlighted Dr. Adeleye’s interdisciplinary approach, combining environmental chemistry, material science, and engineering to remediate polluted ecosystems. Nahid Chalyavi, Associate VP of University Relations at Agilent, commended his innovative research and its alignment with the company’s mission of advancing eco-friendly solutions.
Dr. Adeleye’s work supports initiatives like the FDA’s and USDA’s “Closer-to-Zero” campaign, aimed at minimizing toxic heavy metals in food. His research has also received backing from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Agilent Early Career Professor Award underscores the company’s dedication to fostering groundbreaking research through financial support, collaborative opportunities, and advanced technologies.
