Subhashini Vashisth: Engineering Pioneer and Women in STEM Advocate

As one of the few women in her chemical engineering class at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Subhashini Vashisth quickly learned to navigate a male-dominated field and ensure her voice was heard.

Currently a group leader in polymer synthesis and applications at Eastman, Vashisth has made significant contributions over her nine years at the company, working on process improvements, optimization, and new polymer projects, including sustainable materials for the specialty fluid sector.

She earned her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and has been recognized for her leadership and advocacy in STEM, receiving the 2023 Technology Rising Star Award at the Women of Color STEM Awards and the YWCA Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia Tribute to Women Award for STEM.

Career Motivation and Choice of Chemical Engineering

Vashisth’s motivation stemmed from her parents’ emphasis on the value of education as a pathway to a better life. She excelled in all subjects, and when choosing between medical and engineering fields, she opted for chemical engineering after a competitive national entrance exam in India.

Significance of the Award

For Vashisth, recognition is a powerful motivator. Awards validate the efforts of women of color in STEM, inspire confidence, and pave the way for future generations. She views the awards as both a personal honor and a celebration of the impact women of color have made in the field.

Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity

Vashisth actively contributes to promoting diversity through various roles. As a former global chair of Catalyst ERG at Eastman, she advocated for women’s issues and supported quality initiatives. She also oversees the “Lead Undivided” council with the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, focusing on education and addressing unconscious biases. Additionally, she serves as a scientific advisor for the North American Society of Chemical Reaction Engineering and participates in the AIChE Rising Star leadership program.

Vashisth believes that community service strengthens connections and fosters empathy, positively impacting both local communities and workplaces.
